Sport for all at the University of SouthamptonThe Sport and Recreation (SportRec) team is delighted to welcome you to the University of Southampton (UoS) where you can enjoy a wide-ranging programme of sport and recreational activities throughout the year. The Indoor and Outdoor sports facilities are undoubtedly amongst the best of any British university as a result of continuing investment by SportRec. On Highfield Campus the Jubilee Sports Centre and Students’ Union are home to the majority of the indoor facilities whilst 76 acres of outdoor grass and synthetic pitches can be found at Wide Lane Sports Grounds at Eastleigh. Being situated on the South Coast, we place a strong focus on Watersports at the University Boat Hard on the River Itchen at Swaythling. SportRec promotes sport at all levels from beginners through to elite athletes, providing a comprehensive programme of Coaching Courses, Swimming and Fitness Classes. We are proud to support a large number of elite athletes through the UoS Sports Bursary scheme and the Government’s Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS), including Olympians and Commonwealth Games medalists. The Intra Mural leagues are considered to be some of the most successful of British universities, providing an opportunity for students and staff who don’t play in University teams to take part in friendly but competitive team games on a regular basis. SportRec works closely with the Athletic Union (AU) to provide facilities for Club activities and to ensure the success of the inter-university competitions. University Sports Clubs are run by the students for the students under the guidance of the AU. For further information turn this brochure over and read the comprehensive AU section. With 70 sports clubs and 140 societies to choose from you’ll be spoilt for choice. If you are interested in joining a team, make sure you attend the student “Bun Fight” on Wednesday 1 October 2008 in the Jubilee Sports Centre Sports Hall. As you can see, our programme covers all aspects of sport and recreation and we are confident that there is an activity for everyone to enjoy at the University of Southampton, whether you are a complete novice or a world champion. We employ a dedicated team of sports professionals to take care of all your sporting needs so if you don’t see what you want, come and talk to us, our doors are always open. We look forward to welcoming you to the University of Southampton’s sports facilities. Laurence Barber |
